Introduction

This article describes the issues that are fixed in Update Rollup 8 for Microsoft System Center 2012 R2 Data Protection Manager. It also contains the installation instructions for Update Rollup 8 for System Center 2012 R2 Data Protection Manager.

Note Existing Data Protection Manager to Windows Azure customers should upgrade to the latest agent (version 2.0.8719.0 or later). In case this component is not installed, online backups will fail, and no Data Protection Manager to Windows Azure operation will work.

Issues that are fixed in this update rollup

Data Protection Manager

  • The DPM Agent crashes intermittently during a backup.
  • If you are trying to recover data from an imported tape, DPM may crash with a "Connection to the DPM service has been lost" error.
  • If you try to back up a SharePoint site that uses SQL Always On as a content database, SQL logs are not truncated as expected.
  • You cannot verify tape library compatibility for tapes that use RSMCompatmode settings such as IBM 35xx, 2900, and so on.
  • If you have multiple SharePoint farms hosted on the same SQL cluster with different instances but the same database names, DPM cannot back up the correct SharePoint farm content.
  • If you run Update Rollup 7 for Data Protection Manager 2012 R2, and you have already configured online protection for one or more protection groups, trying to change the protection group populates the default DPM settings for the "Select long-term goals" wizard instead of the previous configured values.
  • When you try to protect a SQL failover cluster, the Data Protection Manager UI crashes for every backup or synchronization operation.
  • If you install Update Rollup 7 for Data Protection Manager 2012 R2, self-service recovery for SQL databases may not work, and you receive the following error message:

How to obtain and install Update Rollup 8 for System Center 2012 R2 Data Protection Manager

Update packages for Data Protection Manager are available from Windows Update or by manual download from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Windows Update

To obtain and install an update package from Microsoft Update, follow these steps on a computer that has a Data Protection Manager component installed:
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Windows Update.
  3. In the Windows Update window, click Check Online for updates from Microsoft Update.
  4. Click Important updates are available.
  5. Select the Update Rollup package, and then click OK.
  6. Click Install updates to install the update package.

Installation instructions
To install this update for Data Protection Manager, follow these steps:
  1. Before you install this update, make a backup of the Data Protection Manager database.
  2. Install this rollup package on the server that's running System Center 2012 R2 Data Protection Manager. To do this, run Microsoft Update on the server.

    Note Before you install this update through Microsoft Update, the Data Protection Manager Administrator Console should be closed. You may have to restart the Data Protection Manager server after you install this update rollup package.

  3. In the Data Protection Manager Administrator Console, update the protection agents. To do this, use one of the following methods.

    Note If the DPM server and protected servers are running DPM 2012 R2 Update Rollup 5 (version 4.2.1292.0) or earlier update rollups, the Agent update will require a restart of protected servers.

    Method 1: Update the protection agents from the Data Protection Manager Administrator Console
    1. Open the Data Protection Manager Administrator Console.
    2. Click the Management tab, and then click the Agents tab.
    3. In the Protected Computer list, select a computer, and then click Update on the Action pane.
    4. Click Yes, and then click Update Agents.



    Method 2: Update the protection agents on the protected servers
    1. Obtain the update protection agent package from the following directory on the System Center 2012 R2 Data Protection Manager server:

      Data_Protection_Manager_installation_location\DPM\DPM\Agents\RA\4.2.1373.0


      The installation packages are as follows:
      • For x86-based updates: i386\1033\DPMProtectionAgent_KB3086084.msp
      • For x64-based updates: amd64\1033\DPMProtectionAgent_KB3086084_AMD64.msp


    2. Run the appropriate DPMProtectionAgent.msp package on each protected server, depending on the architecture of the agent.
    3. Open the Data Protection Manager Administrator Console on the System Center 2012 R2 Data Protection Manager server.
    4. Click the Management tab, and then click the Agents tab. Select the protected server, update the information, and then verify that the agent version number is 4.2.1373.0.

  4. If you have System Center 2012 R2 Data Protection Manager Update Rollup 7 (V4.2.1338.0) installed, the Update Rollup UR8 agent update requires you to restart protected servers.

    Method 1: Update the protection agents from the Data Protection Manager Administrator Console
    1. Open the Data Protection Manager Administrator Console.
    2. Click the Management tab, and then click the Agents tab.
    3. In the Protected Computer list, select a computer, and then click Update on the Action pane.
    4. Click Yes, and then click Update Agents.



    Method 2: Update the protection agents on the protected servers
    1. Obtain the update protection agent package from the following directory on the System Center 2012 R2 Data Protection Manager server:
