This article describes update 3085435 for Microsoft Excel 2016 that was released on August 8, 2017. This update has a prerequisite.

Be aware that the update on the Microsoft Download Center applies to the Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2016. It doesn't apply to the Office 2016 Click-to-Run editions, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home. (How to determine?)

Improvements and fixes

This update includes the following improvements and fixes the following issues:

  • Improves some translations for the Danish and German versions of Excel 2016.
  • Localizes the translation in the warning dialog box that's displayed when you can't save a file by clicking Save As.

  • Adds some Get & Transform features in Excel 2016. For more information, see KB 4011048 .
  • The compiled stream of the VBA project in Excel is corrupted and causes crashes. To work around this issue, install this update and then follow the steps in the "Registry information" section.
  • When you try to insert a spreadsheet solution into an embedded worksheet in Excel 2016, Excel 2016 crashes.

  • In some scenarios, you may experience a silent failure in saving a file in Excel 2016. Meanwhile, you may receive the following message:

    Getting a list of available content types and properties.

    For example, this issue occurs when the path of the file name is greater than 255 characters.

  • When you try to save a workbook in Excel 2016 that has some third-party add-ins installed, Excel 2016 may crash.

  • After you change the type of a chart and then run some VBA scripts that refer to the chart in Excel 2016, Excel 2016 crashes.

Registry information

After you install this update, you can follow these steps to force a recompile of all VBA projects opened in Excel 2016.

Important
Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

  1. Exit all Microsoft Office applications.
  2. Start Registry Editor:
     
    • In Windows 10, go to Start, enter regedit in the Search Windows box, and then select regedit.exe in the search results.
    • In Windows 7, click Start, type regedit in the Search programs and files text box, and then click regedit.exe in the search results.
    • In Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, move your mouse to the upper-right corner, click Search, type regedit in the search text box, and then click regedit.exe in the search results.
  3. Locate and then select the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Excel\Options\
  4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  5. Type ForceVBALoadFromSource, and then press Enter.
  6. In the Details pane, right-click ForceVBALoadFromSource, and then click Modify.
  7. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.

  8. Exit Registry Editor.

Prerequisites

To apply this update, you must have Microsoft Excel 2016 installed.

Restart information

You may have to restart the computer after you install this update.

To determine whether your Office installation is Click-to-Run or MSI-based, follow these steps:

  1. Start an Office 2016 application.
  2. On the File menu, select Account.
  3. For Office 2016 Click-to-Run installations, an Update Options item is displayed. For MSI-based installations, the Update Options item isn't displayed.

How to uninstall this update

Windows 10

  1. Go to Start, enter View Installed Updates in the Search Windows box, and then press Enter.
  2. In the list of updates, locate and select KB3085435, and then select Uninstall.

Windows 8 and Windows 8.1

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then select Search. If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, and then select Search.
  2. Enter windows update, select Windows Update, and then select Installed Updates.
  3. In the list of updates, locate and select KB3085435, and then select Uninstall.

Windows 7

  1. Go to Start, enter Run, and then select Run.
  2. Enter Appwiz.cpl, and then select OK.
  3. Select View installed updates.
  4. In the list of updates, locate and select KB3085435, and then select Uninstall.
