This article describes behavior that occurs on a Windows XP-based computer that's running low on disk space. In this situation, you receive a "Low Disk Space" warning message.

How to disable low disk space warning messages

To disable low disk space warnings, follow these steps.

Important Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restorationin case problems occur.
  1. In Registry Editor, locate and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
  2. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD value.
  3. Type NoLowDiskSpaceChecks, and then press Enter.
  4. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
  5. Type 1, and then click OK.
  6. Exit Registry Editor.
  7. Log off the computer, and then log on again.

Conditions that trigger a "Low Disk Space" warning

When free disk space drops to 200 megabytes (MB), you receive the following message for 10 seconds, once per session:
You are running out of disk space on [drive]. To free space on this drive by deleting old or unnecessary files, click here.

When free disk space drops to 80 MB, you receive the following message for 30 seconds, every four hours, twice per session: 
You are running very low on disk space on [drive]. To free space on this drive by deleting old or unnecessary files, click here.

When free disk drops to 50 MB, you receive the following message for 30 seconds, every five minutes, until the free space rises back above 50 MB: 
You are running very low on disk space on [drive]. To free space on this drive by deleting old or unnecessary files, click here.
