ACC2000: "Record(s) Cannot Be Read" Error Message When You Try to Gain Access to User and Group Permissions or Accounts

When you join to a Microsoft Access 2.0 workgroup information file (.mda) or to an Access 95 or 97 workgroup information file (.mdw) that has been converted from Access 2.0, and you then attempt to gain access to User and Group Permissions or User and Group Accounts, you may receive the following error message: This error message may also appear when you attempt to gain access to User and Group Permissions or User and Group Accounts after you convert an .mda file to an Access 95 or 97 .mdw file.

To resolve this issue, recreate the workgroup information file by using the Workgroup Administrator for Microsoft Access 2000.

Note that when you recreate the workgroup information file, you must supply exactly the same name, organization, and workgroup ID. These values are case sensitive.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

1. Create a new System database (.mda) file by using the Workgroup Administrator for Microsoft Access 2.0, and call in Acc2System.mda.
2. Start Access 2.0, and then secure a database.
3. Quit Access 2.0, and then start either Access 95 or Access 97 but do not open a database file.
4. On the Tools menu, point to Database Utilities, and then click Convert Database.
5. In the Files of type box, click Add-ins, browse to and select Acc2System.mda, and then click Convert.
6. Select Workgroup Files in the Save as type list, name the new file ConvertedSystem.mdw, and then click Save.
7. Quit Access, start the Workgroup Administrator for Access 2000, and then join to ConvertedSystem.mdw.
8. Start Access 2000, and then open the database that you secured in Step 2.
9. Click Convert Database, and then click OK.
10. In the File name box, type a unique name, and then click Save.
11. On the Tools menu, point to Security, and then click either User and Group Permissions or User and Group Accounts.
