Symptoms

Every POST request that comes through Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server-based computer may create a new session to a Web server that is published behind ISA Server.

Cause

Connections with POST that are directed to IIS or another Web server behind ISA Server are not reused or closed. ISA Server does not use cached connections. Under certain load conditions, the number of open connections can overwhelm the Web server, causing it to crash or fail.

Resolution

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this problem, obtain and install the latest service pack for ISA Server 2000, and then edit the registry. After you install the latest service pack for ISA Server 2000, use Registry Editor to create a DWORD value called AlwaysUseConnectCache with a value of 1 or true or yes in the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W3Proxy\Parameters

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

This problem was corrected in ISA Server 2000 Service Pack 1.
