Windows 8.1 can't discover Samsung TV as wireless display device

Symptoms

While attempting to establish a wireless display connection from a Windows 8.1 computer to a new Samsung 2015 TV model, Windows fails to discover the Samsung TV.

Cause

Various Samsung TV models, planned for release in 2015, are preconfigured to support Miracast as both a wireless display device and a source of display content. To support this, its display type is set as a "dual-role" device. However, Windows 8.1 does not recognize the "dual-role" setting and fails to discover the device as a Miracast wireless display device.

Workaround

The following steps can be taken to work around this problem. The Samsung TV can be reconfigured to operate as a display only, so that Windows 8.1 can discover and play content. To do this:

1. On the Samsung TV remote control, press the SOURCE key. Then choose Screen Mirroring.

2. From your Windows 8.1 computer, swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Devices. (If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Devices.)

3. Tap or click Project, and then tap or click Add a wireless display.

Note: If the Add a wireless display option does not appear, then either your wireless network adapter or your current display drivers do not support Miracast. For more information, see Project to a wireless display with Miracast.

4. Choose the TV as the wireless display from the list of devices found, and follow the instructions on the screen.

More Information

For more information about the "dual-role" setting, see the Wi-Fi Display Technical Specification Version 1.0.0, section 4.3 WFD Device Discovery. When operating as a dual-role device, it can operate as either a "WFD Source" or a "Primary Sink". However, Windows 8.1 does not recognize the "dual-role" setting and fails to discover the device.
