Symptoms

Using Windows Essentials 2012 on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1, the Facebook icon in Movie Maker and Photo Gallery no longer works.

Cause

Windows Essentials 2012 uses the 1.0 version of Facebook’s API. Facebook API 1.0 is no longer supported, so the Facebook features in these applications no longer work.

Resolution

To work around this issue:

  1. From Movie Maker or Photo Gallery, save the file to disk.
  2. Open another app, such as Internet Explorer, to access Facebook.
  3. Upload the file to Facebook using that app.

More Information

There are no plans to upgrade either the Facebook API or Windows Essential 2012. Movie Maker and Photo Gallery have lost the Facebook icon functionality, even though the icon is still present in the application.
