Stop error when a Surface Pro 3 that's running Windows 8.1 awakens from Sleep mode

Symptoms

When you awaken a Surface Pro 3 that's running Windows 8.1 from Sleep mode, the system crashes, and you receive the following Stop error message:

0x0000009f
DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE

Note This problem always occurs when software that uses NDIS 5.1 is installed.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft Support. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Windows 8.1 file information and notes
