Printer preferences window is unresponsive when the mouse hovers over the Back button in Windows 8.1

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a Windows 8.1-based computer that has a Microsoft Store device apps printer extension installed.
  • You start a Microsoft Store application such as Reader, and then you try to print from it.
  • After the modern print dialog box opens, you click More Settings to open the printer extension.
When you rest the mouse pointer over the Back button in this scenario, the window may become temporarily unresponsive.

Cause

When you rest the pointer over the Back button, the active focus on the mouse reverts from the WWAHost.exe process to PrintDialogHost.exe. If you move the pointer to a different part of the print preferences window, the active focus is not forwarded to WWAHost.exe as expected. Therefore, the window temporarily stops responding.

Workaround

To work around this issue, move the pointer outside the printer extension window, and then move it back into the printer extension window. This restores the focus.
