You cannot install an additional 64-bit driver for a shared printer on a 32-bit print server

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • A 64-bit print driver is installed on a computer that is running a 64-bit version of Windows 7 that has the sharing option enabled.
  • A 32-bit print driver is installed on a computer that is running a 32-bit version of Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2008 that has the sharing option enabled.
  • The computers can belong to the same workgroup or to different workgroups.
  • You try to install an additional print driver for cross-architecture support in Windows Server 2008 from Windows 7 by following these steps:

    1. Log on to Windows 7 by using any user account.
    2. Access Windows Server 2008 by specifying the name of the server. For example, you specify "\\PrintServerName."
    3. Click View remote printers.
    4. Right-click the printer icon, and then click Sharing.
    5. In the Sharing dialog box, click Additional drivers.
    6. Select the x64 check box, and then click Next.
In this scenario, the installation fails and you receive the following error message:

Unable to install <Printer Name>, x64, Type3 - User Mode driver. This operation is not supported.

Cause

This error occurs because you have insufficient user rights to install additional drivers in Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2008.

Workaround

To work around this problem, use the built-in administrator account in Windows 7 to install the driver. The administrator account in Windows 7 uses the same password as the built-in account for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008.
