Quota.sys deadlock triggers crash on Windows Server 2008 R2-based system

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You are running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1).
  • You apply a new quota to a folder on this computer.
  • At the same time, you rename the folder that the quota applies to.
In this scenario, the system may crash or become unresponsive. If the server is a cluster node, you may also experience a "Stop 0x9E" error.

Note The folder that you apply the quota to and the folder that you rename do not have to be the same folder. For example, if you create a quota for folder A, this problem may occur if you rename folder A or a subfolder of folder A.

Cause

This problem occurs because of a timing issue between the following elements:
  • The new quota information that's being added to the folder
  • The folder that's being renamed
When this problem occurs, it causes the Quota.sys driver to deadlock. Therefore, all I/O to that volume stops responding.

Workaround

To work around this issue, do not apply a quota to a folder and also rename the folder at the same time.
