About the cumulative update

This article describes May 2015 cumulative update (5.0.8308.887) for Microsoft Lync Server 2013 that enables Mac users and Windows users to join a meeting by using Lync Web App in any default browser that you set. This includes a 64-bit version of Chrome in Mac.

Note Lync Web App is not supported on a device that has Internet Explorer 8 installed. If you encounter issues when you use Lync Web App in Chrome or Internet Explorer 8 on the device, upgrade Internet Explorer to Internet Explorer 9 or a later version.

Improvements

After you apply this cumulative update, when a user joins a Lync meeting by using a Chrome device that has a latest version of Lync Web App plug-in installed, Chrome will automatically start a dialog to request that users allow for an external protocol request:

When the user clicks the Launch Application button, a Lync Web App pop-up window starts, and then the user can join the meeting.

Note If the user clicks the Do Nothing button and select theRemember my choice for all links of this type check box, the Lync Web App pop-up window will never start until the user cleans Google Chrome local state file.

To clean Google Chrome local state file, a user must delete data in one of the following paths on a computer:
  • In Windows: $USER_HOME\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\
  • In Mac: Library\Application Support\Google\Chrome\Local State

More Information

Google had made multiple changes in Chrome browser which affected the plug-in that Lync Web App (LWA) uses to provide a rich meeting experience including audio, video and content sharing from the browser. These changes include discontinuing 32-bit Chrome support for Mac and discontinuing support for the so-called "Netscape Plug-in API" (or NPAPI) that is usually used by browser plug-ins. We published the following KB 3025563 in December 2014 for the affected plug-in:
"Google Chrome no longer supports Lync Web App" message when you join a Lync meeting by using Google Chrome

Update for Lync Online

Microsoft is also working on a similar update for Lync Online that is scheduled for early 2015. The upcoming update will enable Lync Online users to join meetings by using Lync Web App in a 64-bit version of Chrome in Mac. This update will improve better user experience and will provide the same Lync Web App experience as in Lync Server 2013.
