Printing preferences window appears behind a RemoteApp window in Windows

This article describes an issue that occurs when you select a printing preferences option of a redirected printer in RemoteApp in Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) with Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) 8.1, Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 with RDC 8.1, Windows 8.1, or Windows Server 2012 R2. A hotfix is available to resolve this issue. The hotfix has a prerequisite.

Symptoms

Assume that you use a redirected printer to print in a RemoteApp window, and you select the local printing preferences option. In this situation, the printing preferences window appears behind the RemoteApp window.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must have April 2014 update rollup for Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 (2919355) installed in Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2. Or, you must be running Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 that has update for RDC 8.1 installed.

Registry information

To use the hotfix in this package, you do not have to make any changes to the registry.

Restart requirement

You may have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.
