Symptoms

When you attempt to install Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 1 (SP1), one or more of the following unexpected events may occur:
  • During Exchange 2000 SP1 Setup, you may be prompted to insert the Exchange 2000 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.
  • During Exchange 2000 SP1 Setup, you may be prompted to overwrite several files.
Exchange 2000 SP1 Setup stops with an error in "Messaging and Collaboration," which is indicated by a red X next to the list entry in the Setup graphical user interface (GUI). After Setup finishes, a gray summary window is displayed that contains the following error message:

Cause

This issue can occur if the core Exchange 2000 SP1 installation files that you downloaded are incomplete. This issue can occur if:
  1. The installation files were corrupted during download.
  2. You did not decompress all five, core parts of Exchange 2000 SP1.
  3. You decompressed the five core files, but you specified different target folders when you ran each part (this is the most likely reason).

Resolution

To resolve this issue, run the Exchange 2000 SP1 core Setup files again, and make sure that you choose the same target folder for each part. If you find that a core Setup file is corrupted, download the core Setup file again. During decompression, the default destination folder for the core Setup files is:
User_Profile_Folder\Local Settings\Temp\Setup\I386
NOTE: The Local Settings folder is a hidden folder.

More information

The core Setup files are E2ksp1_setup1.exe, E2ksp1_setup2.exe, E2ksp1_setup3.exe, E2ksp1_setup4.exe, and E2ksp1_setup5.exe. To verify that you have successfully decompressed all of the core Exchange 2000 SP1 files to the proper folder, right-click the Setup folder that is created by the five parts, and then click Properties. The file details should show that the Setup folder contains 8,865 files and 235 folders, totaling 218 megabytes (MB), or 228,636,338 bytes.
