How to enable logging for Directory Service to Metabase replication

To troubleshoot Directory Service to Metabase replication, you may have to enable logging for the Directory Service to Metabase replication process. By default, this logging is disabled. This article describes how to edit the registry to enable logging for the Directory Service to Metabase replication process.

As of Exchange 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2) or later, you do not have to add this object in the registry. The key

MSEXCHANGEMU

already exists under the following registry: Additionally, on the Diagnostic Logging tab of the Server object in Exchange System Manager there now exists an object named MSEXCHANGEMU. When you increase the logging level to Maximum, the value of the registry setting is set to 5. If you have Exchange 2000 SP1 or earlier, you must still manually add the registry keys by using the procedure that is in the "More Information" section of this article.

To enable logging for the Directory Service to Metabase replication process:

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2. Locate and click the following key in the registry:
   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services
3. On the Edit menu, click Add Key, and then add the following registry key name:
   MSExchangeMU
   NOTE: After you add this key, leave the Class box blank, and then click OK.
   
   
4. Click the key that you just created, click Add Key on the Edit menu, and then add the following registry key name:
   Diagnostics
   NOTE: After you add this key, leave the Class box blank, and then click OK.
   
   
5. Click the key that you just created, click Add Value on the Edit menu, and then add the following value name:
   Value name: 1 General
   Data type: REG_DWORD (for example)
   Radix: Hexadecimal
   Value data: 5
6. Quit Registry Editor.

By default, this registry key does not exist. After you create it, you must restart the System Attendant service. After you create this key, you can change logging levels dynamically. To do so, start Exchange System Manager, open Server properties, and then click the Diagnostics Logging tab.
