HOW TO: Copy a Published Web to a Local Computer With FrontPage 2000

You may want to save a copy of your published Web site on a local computer. This article explains how to publish a Web site to a local drive.

You can publish your Web to a folder on your local file system or to a Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path. For example, you can make a backup copy of your entire Web by publishing the Web to a new disk-based location, such as C:\Backup.

There are two methods for copying a published Web site to a local computer. Use Method 1 for Web sites that have the Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions. Method 2 is for Web sites stored on servers that do not have the FrontPage Server Extensions installed, and this method uses the Import Wizard.

Method 1: Open the Web with HTTP and Publish

1. Start FrontPage.
2. Open your Web by using HTTP.For additional information about opening a Web with HTTP, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

3. On the File menu, click Publish Web.
4. Click Options to expand the list of options.
5. Click Publish all pages, click to select the Include subwebs check box, and then click to clear the Secure connection required check box.
6. In the Specify the location to publish your web to box, type the path to the folder on your file system, such as C:\Backup, or type the UNC path to a server and share, such as \\Webs\Myfolder. Alternatively, you can click Browse, select the folder, and then click Open to specify the location.
7. Click Publish. If prompted to convert this folder into a new Web, click Yes.

Method 2: Using the Import Wizard

If the site does not support server extensions, create an empty Web, and then import the Web through the Import Wizard.

1. Start FrontPage.
2. On the File menu, click Close.
3. On the File menu, click Import.
4. In the Specify the location of the new Web box, type the local path for the new Web that will be created from the imported source directory or Web, and then click OK.
5. Click Import Web Wizard, and then click OK.
6. Click From a World Wide Web site, and then type the complete URL of the starting page that you want to import in the Location box.
   
   The starting page can be any page in the Web, not just the home page.
7. If you want to import a Web that uses Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) for secure transactions, click to select the Secure connection required (SSL) check box.
8. Click Next.
9. To import the entire Web, click to clear the following check boxes:
   • Limit to this page plus
   • Limit to KB
   • Limit to text and image files
10. Click Next, and then click Finish.

NOTE: If you import a Microsoft Access database (.mdb extension), you will be prompted to create a database connection.
