Black screen after swiping up and down on Windows 8.1 lock screen

Symptoms

If you quickly swipe up and down on the Windows 8.1 lock screen, you may get an unresponsive black screen.

Cause

If your settings allow the Camera app to start by swiping down on the lock screen, swiping up and down may cause the Camera app and the touch keyboard to come up at the same time.

Resolution

Push and hold the power button to shut down the device, then push it again to start the device.

More Information

The setting that allows the Camera app to start from the lock screen can be disabled:

  1. Swipe in from the right to bring up the charms      
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Select Change PC Settings
  4. Tap PC and devices
  5. On the Lock screen page, under Camera, switch off Swipe down on the lock screen to use the Camera
