Symptoms

When Exchange 2000 Server Setup tries to create Internet Information Services (IIS) Metabase objects for Base Distributed Authoring Version (DAV) protocol, Exchange 2000 Server Setup may not complete and you may receive the following error message:
Setup failed while installing sub-component Base DAV protocol with error code 0x80070003 (please consult the installation logs for a detailed description). You may cancel the installation or try the failed step again.
You receive the options Retry or Cancel.

Cause

This behavior can occur because the Default Web Site in Internet Services Manager has been deleted and Exchange 2000 Setup cannot continue until you re-create the Default Web Site. Text similar to the following is logged in the Exchange 2000 Server Setup Progress.log:
[19:25:48] Creating IIS Metabase objects for Base DAV protocol
[19:25:48] Entering CMetabaseKey::ScOpen
[19:25:48] Path = 'IIS://LCLAB1B34C/W3SVC/1' CMetabaseKey::ScOpen (K:\admin\src\libs\exsetup\mbob.cxx:52) Error code 0X80070003 (3): The system cannot find the path specified.
[19:25:48] Leaving CMetabaseKey::ScOpen
[19:25:48] CAtomDAV::ScAddMetabaseKeys (K:\admin\src\udog\exsetdata\components\server\a_dav.cxx:568) Error code 0X80070003 (3): The system cannot find the path specified.
[19:25:48] Leaving CAtomDAV::ScAddMetabaseKeys
[19:25:48] CBaseAtom::ScAdd (K:\admin\src\udog\setupbase\basecomp\baseatom.cxx:860) Error code 0X80070003 (3): The system cannot find the path specified.
[19:25:48] Service = '' CBaseServiceAtom::ScAdd (K:\admin\src\udog\setupbase\basecomp\basesvcatom.cxx:196) Error code 0X80070003 (3): The system cannot find the path specified.
[19:25:48] mode = 'Install' (61953) CBaseAtom::ScSetup (K:\admin\src\udog\setupbase\basecomp\baseatom.cxx:775) Error code 0X80070003 (3): The system cannot find the path specified.
The following path is being verified in the Progress.log and is located in the metabase:
IIS://ComputerName/W3SVC/1
Because the Web site does not exist, the path is not present and the installation does not respond.

Resolution

To resolve this behavior, you must re-create the Default Web Site on this server. To do so:

  1. Start Internet Services Manager.
  2. Right-click YourServerName, click New, and then click Web Site. This step starts the Web Site Creation Wizard.
  3. Click Next.
  4. Enter a description for this Web site, and then click Next.
  5. Set the appropriate Internet Protocol (IP) and port setting, and then click Next.
  6. Set the path for the Web site, and then click Next.
  7. Set the appropriate Web site access permissions, and then click Next.
  8. Click Finish.
After you create this Web site, return to your Exchange 2000 installation, click Retry, and then the installation continues.
