Cannot Enter Standby Mode During a Critical Process

Symptoms

If you are working in the console of a Windows Windows Server 2003-based computer while someone is logged into a remote desktop session at the same time and you attempt to enter Standby mode, you computer may not enter Standby mode. Instead, you may receive a "preparing for standby" message for a few seconds, and then the log on screen may return.

Cause

This behavior can occur if your computer is currently occupied with a sensitive or critical activity such as creating (burning) a CD-ROM. As a safety feature, Windows Windows Server 2003 prevents the use of Standby mode if it will interrupt a critical process.
