Mouse or touchpad does not work correctly when you are turning off a Bluetooth mouse

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows 8 or a later version.
  • A Bluetooth mouse was paired in Windows and is turned on.
  • You press a mouse button while you are turning off the Bluetooth mouse.

In this scenario, you may notice one of the following symptoms when you try to use the touchpad or mouse:

  • At the Windows Start screen, when you left-click the mouse or touchpad, nothing happens, or you are taken to the Manage Bluetooth devices page. When you right-click the mouse, nothing happens the first time that you click.
  • At the Desktop, when you left-click the mouse or touchpad, nothing happens, or the shortcut menu is displayed. When you right-click the mouse, nothing happens the first time that you click.
Note You may also experience these symptoms if you turn on the Bluetooth mouse again and then try to use it.

Cause

If a mouse button is accidentally pressed while the Bluetooth mouse is being turned off, the system sees a Mouse Down Event and waits for a corresponding Mouse Up Event to complete the mouse click. However, because the mouse is being turned off, the Mouse Up Event is not sent to the system. At that point, as far as the system is concerned, the user is still holding down the mouse button. Therefore, any other input action from an input device will result in behavior that would occur if the mouse button was still being held down.

Workaround

To work around this issue, perform a single left-click and then right-click of the mouse or touchpad. This should reset the button state, and input behavior should return to its usual mode.
