"No host bus adapter is present" error when querying SAS cable issues in Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2012

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

This issue occurs if the host bus adapter (HBA) uses an SCSI_DMA64_MINIPORT_64BIT_ONE_4GB_SUPPORTED flag and supports 64-bit addressing in a single 4-gigabyte (GB) region. The BIOS reserves memory in the 0 to 4 GB range in some systems. When this occurs, the Storport driver may provide the HBA with an address space that is less than the full 4-GB region. Therefore, some I/O requests may fail with an insufficient resource status.

Note SAS means Serial Attached SCSI.

To resolve this issue, we have released a hotfix. Even though this issue has only been observed in Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2012, the hotfix also applies to Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1 Windows 8, and Windows RT.

Important Do not install a language pack after you install this hotfix. If you do, the language-specific changes in the hotfix will not be applied, and you will have to reinstall the hotfix. For more information, see Add language packs to Windows.
