"0x000000AB" Stop error in Windows Server 2012-based RDS server when you log off from a Remote Desktop session

Symptoms

When this issue occurs, all the running Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) sessions on the Remote Desktop Services (RDS) server stop responding, and the unsaved work on these sessions will be lost. Additionally, the Stop error message resembles the following:

STOP: 0x000000AB (parameter1 , parameter2 , parameter3 , parameter4 )

Notes
  • The Stop error 0x000000AB describes the SESSION_HAS_VALID_POOL_ON_EXIT issue.
  • The parameters in this Stop error message vary, depending on the configuration of the computer.
  • Not all 0x000000AB Stop errors are caused by this issue.

Cause

This issue occurs because of a memory leak in the Win32k.sys subsystem.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, we have released a hotfix for Windows Server 2012. This hotfix has a restart requirement.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix Download Available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, submit a request to Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.
