Update of multimedia class device drivers fails after you upgrade Windows

This article describes an issue that occurs after you upgrade your computer from Windows 8, Windows RT, or Windows Server 2012 to Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, or Windows Server 2012 R2. A hotfix is available to resolve this issue. The hotfix has a prerequisite.

Cause

This issue occurs because the multimedia class driver registry keys are overwritten with the stale values from the previous operating system during the upgrade of the operating system.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
