This article describes how to:
- Create a subweb from an existing folder in your Microsoft FrontPage Web.
-and- - Assign permissions to that newly created subweb.
When you create a FrontPage Web, you may want to restrict access to certain portions of that Web. To do this, create a subweb within the Web, and then restrict access to that subweb.
Create a Subweb and Add Permissions
To create a subweb from a folder stored in an existing FrontPage Web and apply specific permissions to that subweb, follow these steps.
Create a Subweb
- Start Microsoft FrontPage 2000.
- On the File menu, click Open Web.
- In the Open Web dialog box, click the Web that you want or type the URL to the Web that you want in the Folder name box (for example, http://webserver). Click Open.
- In the Enter Network Password dialog box, type your user name, password, and domain in the corresponding boxes, and then click OK.
- In the Folder List pane, right-click the folder that you want to convert to a subweb. On the shortcut menu that appears, click Convert to Web.
You receive the following message:
Changing this folder into a Web will cause pages in it to change.
- Pages that include files may not be updated when included files change
- Hyperlinks on navigation bars may be removed
Are you sure you want to do this?
- Click Yes.
NOTE: The folder icon now contains a globe shape.
Apply Security Permissions
- Double-click the folder that you converted to a subweb.
The subweb is opened in a second instance of Microsoft FrontPage 2000. - On the Tools menu, point to Security, and then click Permissions.
- In the Permissions - subweb dialog box, click Use unique permissions for this web on the Settings tab, and then click Apply.
- On the Users tab, click Only registered users have browse access, and then click Add.
- In the Add Users dialog box, click the Domain that you want in the Obtain list from list.
- In the Names list, click the user name that you want, and then click Add>>. Repeat this step for each user that you want to add.
- Under Allow users to, click the type of access that you want to allow (for example, Browse this web), and then click OK.
- If you want to specify the type of access for each user, click the user name that you want on the Users tab, and then click Edit.
- In the Edit Users dialog box, under Allow Users to, click the type of access that you want (for example, Author and browse this Web), and then click OK.
- Click Apply, and the click OK.
- On the File menu, click Close. The new security permissions are applied to the subweb.
- Quit FrontPage.
When you now attempt to browse to the subweb, you are prompted for your user name, password, and domain. If you click
Cancel, a page similar to the following appears:
