FP2000: Run-Time Error When You Submit a Form

Symptoms

When you click the Submit button on a Web-based form, you may receive the following error message:
FrontPage Run-Time Component Page. You have submitted a form or followed a link to a page that requires a web server and the FrontPage Server Extensions to function properly. This form or other FrontPage components will work correctly if you publish this web to a web server that has the FrontPage Server Extensions installed.

Cause

This behavior can occur for either of the following reasons:
  • You need to recalculate the hyperlinks on the remote server.

    -or-
  • The _vti_bin folder is missing from the site. To verify this, browse to the following file on the remote server:
    http://www.mysite.com/_vti_bin/shtml.dll
    If you receive the following error message
    The page cannot be found
    the _vti_bin folder is missing from the site, and you need to reinstall the FrontPage Server Extensions to re-create the folder.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, use either of the following methods, as appropriate.

Recalculate Hyperlinks on the Remote Server

To recalculate the hyperlinks on the remote server, follow these steps:
  1. Establish an Internet connection.
  2. Start Microsoft FrontPage, and then click Open Web on the File menu.
  3. In the Folder name box, type the name of the Web (for example, http://www.mysite.com), and then click Open.
  4. When prompted, type your user name and password.
  5. When FrontPage finishes loading your Web, click Recalculate Hyperlinks on the Tools menu.
  6. In the Recalculate Hyperlinks dialog box, click Yes.

Reinstall FrontPage Server Extensions to Re-create the Missing _vti_bin Folder

To reinstall FrontPage Server Extensions to re-create the missing _vti-bin folder, follow these steps:
  1. Start Internet Services Manager.
  2. Expand the server in question to verify that the _vti_bin folder is missing.
  3. Right-click the site, select All Tasks, and then click Remove Server Extensions.
  4. Confirm that the Preserve web meta-information for a later upgrade or a reinstall of the FrontPage Server Extensions check box is selected, and then click OK.
  5. Right-click the site, select All Tasks, and then click Configure Server Extensions.
