The mouse cursor is not displayed when the ShowCursor function is set to True on Windows 8 or Windows 8.1

Symptoms

You have a touch-screen-only system (no mouse or pen) that is running Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. When the ShowCursor function is set to True to display the mouse cursor, it returns 0 as expected. However, the mouse cursor is not displayed.

The fix for this problem is included in security update 3002885 . This update is dated November 11, 2014.
