Error when you call an Excel application object on Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012

Symptoms

When you call a Microsoft Excel application object on a computer that is running Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012, an error occurs.

Cause

This problem occurs when the input method editor (IME) generates too many WM_TIMER messages in the message queue of the target application window.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft Support. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing.
