  1. Set up Exchange 2000 as outlined in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
    316886 How to migrate from Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000 Server
  2. Before you use the Move Mailbox method, run a directory export of Exchange Server 5.5, and change the primary Windows NT account to the accounts on Windows 2000. Import these changes back into the Exchange Server 5.5 directory.
  3. Replicate the Active Directory Connector (ADC) to make the changes to Active Directory, and then use the Move Mailbox method to move the mail to the Exchange 2000 server.
