Azure Backup Agent cannot be installed on Windows Server 2008

Symptoms

When you try to install Microsoft Azure Backup Agent on a computer that is running an x64-based version of Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2), the operation fails. Additionally, you receive the following error message:

Microsoft Azure Recovery Services Agent can only be installed on a computer running Windows version greater than Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.

Cause

This issue occurs because any operating system that is earlier than Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) does not support the Microsoft Azure Backup feature.

How to obtain this update

To resolve this issue, we have released an update (version number 2.0.8692.0) for x64-based versions of Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2). To obtain this update from the Microsoft Download Center, click the following link:
Note After you install this update, Azure Backup Agent can be installed in all x64-based versions of Windows Server 2008 SP2.
