Update to change event log text in Windows 8, Windows RT, or Windows Server 2012

Symptoms

When Automatic Updates downloads some updates in Windows 8, Windows RT, or Windows Server 2012, the following text is displayed in event ID 17:
Note The text of event ID 17 is sometimes misleading, because event ID 17 is logged even if the Windows Updates are already set to be installed later, and no administrative action is required.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install the December 2014 update rollup for Windows RT, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012.

  • After you install the update, the event log will instead display the following text:
  • The update only affects the event log text, and does not affect the operation of Windows updates.
