Error messages when application installation or uninstallation fails in Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

During the installation or uninstallation of applications in Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows 8.1, you receive one of the following error messages:

Application or exe has stopped working. Windows is searching for a solution.

The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click OK to terminate the application.

Note
The error message may indicate that an application error is encountered during the initialization process. This information is being distributed to users and to Windows Error Reporting (WER) to collect information about the failure and help investigate potential fixes or mitigations.

Status

This is expected behavior for an initialization process failure.

More Information

Before these error messages were distributed, the initialization process was failing silently. Both WER and users were unaware of the failure directly. This change in error messaging does not change the behavior of the application itself. If the user clicks OK, the application continues to behave as it had before. However, please be aware that this is a real error and may indicate an existing problem in the application that should be investigated.

The specific change is not to abruptly end the initialization failure process but, instead, to let the process exit gracefully by raising an exception and displaying an error message to the user.
