Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon does not appear or does not work in Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have USB 3.0 ports on a computer that is running Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, or Windows Server 2012 R2.
  • You connect a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 hub and an SD card reader to the computer through one of the USB 3.0 ports.
In this scenario, one of the following issues occurs:
  • The Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon does not appear on the taskbar.
  • The Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon appears on the taskbar. However, the eject hardware option does not appear.
