View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Assume that you have an environment that uses the following configurations:
  • Hyper-V server that is running on Windows Server 2012 R2 or Hyper-V Server 2012 R2.
  • Windows Server 2003-based guest operating system.
  • Two virtual IDE controllers are configured in the virtual machine:
    • IDE Controller 0 has a virtual hard disk attached to location 0 and a DVD drive is attached to location 1.
    • IDE Controller 1 has a virtual hard disk attached to location 0.

When you try to use Windows Server Backup to back up a virtual machine on the Hyper-V server, you receive the following error message:

Backup failed to complete. None of the items included in the backup were backed up.

Cause

This issue occurs because the data drive of the virtual machine is connected to the secondary IDE controller, IDE Controller 1. Therefore, the emulated IDE controller reports an incorrect bus number.

Resolution 1 (recommended)
