Cannot Download with Internet Explorer

Symptoms

When you attempt to download a file with Microsoft Internet Explorer, one of the following symptoms may occur:
  • If you click a link to download a file, nothing happens.
  • If you right-click the link, and then click Save Target As on the shortcut menu that appears, the Save As dialog box appears briefly and then disappears.
You not be able to download a file from the Internet.

Cause

This issue can occur in the following situation:
  • Go!Zilla is installed on your computer.

    -and-
  • The Go!Zilla installation is damaged.
NOTE: To determine whether this issue is caused by Go!Zilla, press the ALT key while you click a link to download a file. If the File Download dialog box appears, a damaged Go!Zilla installation may be the cause of this issue.

Resolution

To work around this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented. NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

Method 1: Uninstall Go!Zilla

To uninstall Go!Zilla, follow these steps:
  1. On the taskbar, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, click Go!Zilla, and then click Add/Remove.
  4. In the Select Uninstall Method dialog box that appears, click Automatic, and then click Next.
  5. Click Finish. If a Remove Shared Component dialog box appears, click Yes to All.
  6. Click OK to restart the computer.

Method 2: Repair Microsoft Internet Explorer

If the problem is not resolved, attempt to repair Internet Explorer. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the taskbar, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, click Internet Explorer 5.5 SP1 and Internet Tools, and then click Add/Remove.
  4. In the Internet Explorer 5.5 and Internet Tools dialog box, click Repair Internet Explorer, then click OK, and then click Yes to confirm the repair.
  5. Click Yes to restart the computer.

Step 3: Reinstall Microsoft Internet Explorer

If you are unable to repair Internet Explorer, obtain and install a new copy of it.
