Laptop may black screen if you close and open the lid very quickly when full-screen MPO content is being played

Symptoms

Assume that you have a computer that is running Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, or Windows Server 2012 R2. The computer has Multi-Plane Overlay (MPO) enabled graphic driver installed and you configure the system to do nothing when the lid is closed. When MPO content is being played in full-screen mode, if you close and then open the lid very quickly, for example, in less than 1 second, you may see a black screen after. The black screen issue may disappear after a certain time.

Cause

This is caused by a known issue in Windows. When the lid closes and opens quickly and overlays are in use system may get into inconsistent state which results in black screen.

Resolution

To prevent this issue from occurring, do not close and open the lid very quickly. If the issue occurs, you can close the lid again, wait for few seconds, and then open it. The issue will then disappear. You can also use a keyboard shortcut like Alt+Tab to let Windows switch to another window, or use Ctrl+Alt+Del to switch to the logon UI. This causes the issue to disappear.
