A monitor that is still connected may go blank when hot-unplugging another on a multiple monitor system

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a system that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You have a graphics card that supports four outputs (two DisplayPort and two DVI).
  • You have monitors attached to all four ports.
  • You unplug one of the DVI-attached monitors while the system is running.

In some cases, one or two of the DisplayPort monitors that are still connected may go blank. If you open the Screen Resolution control panel, you see that they are disabled.

Cause

This appears to be the result of a timing problem in the Windows display management code.

Resolution

Use the Screen Resolution control panel to re-enable and reconfigure the monitors as you want.
