Performance issues when you use credential roaming on RD Session Host servers in Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You set up credential roaming for a user who uses a shared Remote Desktop Session Host (RD Session Host) server that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1).
  • The user logs on to a computer that is running Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 to establish a Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) connection to the RD Session Host server.
In this scenario, the RDP connection may be slow. If you do not recognize this issue in time, other new RDP connections to the server freeze indefinitely. Eventually, the server freezes, and it must be restarted to recover from this frozen status.

NoteThe number of users that is required to cause this issue varies. The number is determined by the number and the size of the certificates that credential roaming is synchronizing.
