XADM: Event ID 485 and 490 Messages When You Try to Mount the Information Store

Symptoms

After you replace a failed hard disk or restore your Exchange 2000 server, you cannot mount the information store. The following event ID messages are logged in Event Viewer:

Information Store (2196) An attempt to delete the file "E:\exchange backup\mdbdatabackup\E00.chk" failed with system error 21 (0x00000015): "The device is not ready. ". The delete file operation will fail with error -1022 (0xfffffc02).

Cause

This issue occurs because the path for the E00.chk file is not correct, which may be caused by a drive failure.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, correct the path for the E00.chk file, and then point the path settings to the correct location. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click the First Storage Group object, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the General tab, and then in the System Path Location box, enter a valid drive location.
