Driver letter is unexpectedly assigned after you mount a volume to a folder in Windows Server 2012 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install a new hard disk on a Windows Server 2012 R2-based computer.
  • You open Server manager, click File and Storage Services, click volumes, and then click Disk.
  • You create a new volume on the disk. When you create the volume, you use these options:
    • Format the disk as a GUID partition table (GPT) style disk.
    • Mount the volume to a folder instead of assigning a driver letter to it.
  • You restart the computer.
In this scenario, the volume of the disk is assigned a driver letter after the restart.
