VPN connection cannot be established when you use a Wi-Fi connection in Windows 8.1 or Windows 8

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a computer that is running Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows RT, Windows 8, or Windows Server 2012.
  • You connect the computer to a wireless network.
  • You try to establish a virtual private network (VPN)connection by using a third-party application.
In this scenario, the VPN connection cannot be established if the wireless signal is unstable and the status frequently changes between strong and weak.

Cause

When you try to establish the VPN connection, the VPN application adds static routes that relate to the Wi-Fi interface to the VPN server. The Wi-Fi interface receives incorrect signal notifications if the wireless signal is unstable between strong and weak. Therefore, the static routes cannot work correctly.
