Wi-Fi connection displays a red X status for 20-30 seconds after a Windows 8.1-based computer resumes from hibernation

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

After you resume a Windows 8.1-based computer from hibernation (or a hybrid shutdown), a red X appears on the Wi-Fi (wireless) WLAN icon. After 20-30 seconds, the connection automatically resumes a normal connected status, and no user action is required.

Cause

When a Windows 8.1-based computer resumes from hibernation, NDIS notifies the WLAN service that the wireless adapter is ready before the adapter has completed initialization. The WLAN service then tries to issue a scan, but the scan fails. Therefore, a red X appears, signaling that the connection is not working.

Resolution

After you resume from hibernation, the red X problem clears up after 20-30 seconds, and the Wi-Fi connection starts working again. A hotfix is not being provided for this problem because of the limited effect on the user. A fix to resolve this problem is being considered for a future release of Windows.
