To determine whether a problem exists with the FrontPage Server Extensions installation on the Web server, follow these steps:
- Browse to the FrontPage Server Extensions configuration page on the Web server. To do this, start Microsoft Internet Explorer, type the address to the _vti_inf.html page on the Address bar, and then click Go. For example:
http://www.webserver.com/_vti_inf.html
A FrontPage Configuration Information page that contains information similar to the following should appear:
In the HTML comments, this page contains configuration information that the FrontPage Explorer and FrontPage Editor need to communicate with the FrontPage server extensions installed on this Web server. Do not delete this page.
- Browse to a Web page on the server. For example:
http://www.webserver.com/testpage.htm
- Browse to the same Web page but through the Shtml.dll program (Shtml.exe on a UNIX-based server). For example:
http://www.webserver.com/_vti_bin/shtml.dll/testpage.htm
- Click the Refresh button.
The Web page should appear in your browser both before and after you click Refresh.
If there is a problem with the FrontPage Server Extensions installation on the server, you receive an error message similar to the following when you click Refresh:404 Not Found
The Web server cannot find the file or script you asked for. Please check the URL to ensure that the path is correct
Please contact the server's administrator if this problem persists.
If you are unable to view the pages by following the preceding steps, the Web server may have one or more of the following issues:
- FrontPage Server Extensions may not be installed.
- FrontPage Server Extensions may not be correctly configured.
- The Web Presence Provider (WPP) may need to run the Check Server Extensions operation on the Web site.
- The _vti_bin folder and its contents on the Web server may be missing or corrupted.
