Shared printer name displays incorrectly in Windows

This article describes an issue when you connect to a network shared printer in Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 8, Windows RT, or Windows Server 2012. Check out the details of the issue.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install the hotfix that is described in this article or the update rollup (recommended) that contains this hotfix. You may have to restart the computer after you install the hotfix or update rollup.

The update rollup fixes many other issues in addition to the issue that the hotfix fixes. We recommend that you use the update rollup. The update rollup is larger than the hotfix. Therefore, the update rollup takes longer to download.

Symptoms

Assume that you have a computer that is running Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 8, Windows RT, or Windows Server 2012. When you connect the computer to a network shared printer, the printer model name is used as the printer icon name in the Devices and Printers item. The network shared printer name is not used as expected.
