Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 cannot connect over DirectAccess to a Remote Desktop Session Host server farm

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a Remote Desktop Services (RDS) deployment.
  • The deployment contains an RD Connection Broker server and one or more RD Session Host servers or RD Virtualization Host servers.
  • The deployment is running Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, or Windows Server 2012 R2.
  • You expose the RDS Endpoint servers to users outside your corporate network by using DirectAccess.

In this scenario, clients can use Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 Remote Desktop Connection to connect to the RD Connection Broker server but cannot connect to their target endpoint in the RD Session Host server farm.

Cause

This problem occurs because the client does not try all the endpoint addresses that are passed in the redirection packet of the RD Connection Broker server.

Additionally, the dates and the times may change when you perform certain operations on the files.

Windows 8.1 file information and notes

Important Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows 8.1" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2" section. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
