More Information

When the source file is large enough, the BaseCopyStream function tries to perform an Offload Copy process. However, when you try to copy a VSS backup from the local drive to a local directory, the Offload Read command fails. Then, the BaseCopyStream function tries to reset the file pointers on the handles to perform a normal copy. In this situation, the SetFilePointer call on the VSS file fails with the STATUS_MEDIA_WRITE_PROTECTED error because the volume is read-only.
