Surface Pro 2: Slow disk performance when you have a specific Intel driver installed

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

On a Surface Pro 2 device that has a Samsung SSD 64 gigabyte (GB) or 128 GB hard disk drive (Samsung MZMPC128HBFU-000MV or MZMPC128HBFU-000MV), you may experience the following symptoms:
  • The system is so slow or unresponsive that you cannot type your password to log on.
  • System performance is so slow or unresponsive that it is difficult to do anything after you are logged on to Windows.
  • If you let the device run for a long time, system performance may improve to the point where you can log on and perform basic tasks. However, the system may still seem to freeze or may not accept commands, depending on what you are doing.

Cause

These symptoms may occur if the following Intel 8 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller driver is installed under IDE ATA/ATAPI controller in Device Manager:
  • Driver Date: 8/28/2013
  • Driver Version: 12.8.2.1000
This problem occurs because of a conflict between the Intel 8 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller driver and the device drivers for the Samsung model hard disk drives. We are working with both hardware manufacturers to help them resolve this compatibility issue.

Workaround

To work around this issue, install a new driver. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Device Manager.
  2. Locate the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers branch. Intel 8 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI controller should be displayed.
  3. Right-click Properties.
  4. On the Driver tab, click Update driver.
  5. Click Browse my computer for driver software, and then click Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.
  6. Select Intel 8 Series SATA AHCI Controller -9c03 Version 9.4.0.1021(7/9/2013).

Note Make sure that you select the driver that has the correct version and date.
  7. Restart the system.
