Symptoms

After you deploy Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2 from Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2013, the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP) option may be enabled on the computer. You can see evidence of this in Server Manager and in the Windows registry:

Server Manager

The following registry key is set to 0x1:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows!CEIPEnable

Cause

By default, Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2013 sets the ProtectYourPC entry its answer files as follows:
<ProtectYourPC>1</ProtectYourPC>

This setting controls Windows Update settings and also opting in to the CEIP.

Workaround

To work around this issue, either delete or change the registry key that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section as part of the deployment. For example, at the beginning of the StateRestore phase of your task sequence, you could add a new step that runs the following command:
Reg.exe delete HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows /V CEIPEnable /f

More Information

In versions of Windows Server earlier than Windows Server 2012, the ProtectYourPC entry was ignored on server installations. However, starting with Windows Server 2012, Setup respects this setting.
