Symptoms

When you use Microsoft Excel Web App to open a spreadsheet that contains one or more apps for Office, you receive the following error message:
We couldn't connect to the catalog server for this app.

Cause

This issue occurs because the URL of the catalog server is wrong.

Resolution

There are two possible configurations for Microsoft Office Web Apps Server 2013 and Microsoft SharePoint Server 2013.

Office Web Apps Server 2013

To resolve this issue, apply update KB2920737 for Office Web Apps Server 2013. This update is available only for manual download and installation from the Microsoft Download Center.
Virus-scan claim
Microsoft scanned this file for viruses by using the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help prevent any unauthorized changes to it.

To apply this update, you must have Microsoft SharePoint Server 2013 that has Office Web Apps Server 2013 installed or Microsoft Office Web Apps Server 2013 Service Pack 1 installed.

SharePoint Server 2013

To apply this update, you must have the update March 12, 2013 update for SharePoint Server 2013 (KB2767999) or Microsoft SharePoint Server 2013 Service Pack 1 installed.

Note This update does not apply to Microsoft SharePoint configurations that do not have Office Web Apps Server 2013. A separate update will be required to fix Excel Reader for Microsoft SharePoint Server.
