Audit event ID 4661 triggers an invalid XML error in a Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2008 environment

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have Windows Server 2012 R2-based or Windows Server 2008 R2-based domain controllers.
  • You use a solution, such as Microsoft System Center Operations Manager, that monitors the security event logs from the domain controllers. The solution consumes these events in XML format.
In this scenario, Security Audit event 4661 contains an invalid value in the Privileges field. This corrupts the XML, and solutions that consume these events may fail or may report errors.

Resolution

To resolve this issue in Windows Server 2012 R2, install update rollup 2962409.
To resolve this issue in Windows Server 2008 R2, install the hotfix that is described in this article.
