Non-delivery report is generated when an Exchange Server 5.5 user sends mail to an Exchange 2000 Server user or an Exchange Server 2003 user

In a mixed-mode Exchange organization, when a user on a Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 computer sends mail to a user homed on an Exchange 2000 server or an Exchange Server 2003 server, one of the following non-delivery report (NDR) may be generated: If the Exchange Server 5.5 user sends mail to the X.400 address of an Exchange 2000 user from a personal address book entry, the operation is successful.

This problem occurs when the value of the LegacyExchangeDN attribute of the mailbox in Active Directory does not match the value of the OBJ-DIST-NAME attribute of the corresponding object in the Exchange Server 5.5 directory,

To work around this issue, change the connection agreement to replicate objects from Microsoft Windows to the Exchange Server 5.5 Recipients container. To do this, use one of the following methods:

Method 1

1. In Active Directory Connector Manager, click the Active Directory Connector(ServerName) object in the left pane.
2. In the right pane, click a recipients connection agreement, right-click it, and then click Properties.
3. Click the From Windows tab.
4. Next to the Default Destination box, click Modify.
5. Expand Site_Name, click the Recipients container, and then click OK.
6. The default destination should now start with "cn=Recipients."
7. Click OK to close the Properties dialog box for this recipient connection agreement.

Method 2

1. In Active Directory Connector Manager, click the Active Directory Connector (ServerName) object in the left pane.
2. In the right pane, click the recipients connection agreement that you want.
3. Right-click the recipients connection agreement, and then click Properties.
4. Click the From Windows tab.
5. Click to select the Create objects in location specified by Exchange 5.5 DN check box, and then click OK.

To resolve this problem, change the one-way recipients connection agreement to a two-way connection agreement.

If you are running Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server in the organization, make sure that you install the latest Exchange 2000 Server service pack before you perform these steps. 1. In Active Directory Connector Manager, click the Active Directory Connector (Server_Name) object in the left pane.
2. In the right pane, click the one-way recipients connection agreement that you want.
3. Right-click the recipients connection agreement, and then click Properties.
4. On the General tab, click Two-way, and then click OK.
5. Click the From Windows tab, and then click Add.
6. Click the container that you want to synchronize with Exchange Server 5.5, and then click OK two times.
7. Close Active Directory Connector Manager.

When a mailbox is created by using the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in, the mailbox object automatically receives the following default value in the LegacyExchangeDN attribute:When the Active Directory Connector is configured, a directory object corresponding to the mailbox object in Active Directory is created in the Exchange Server 5.5 directory. The OBJ-DIST-NAME attribute of the Exchange Server 5.5 directory object is derived from the container where the object is created. If the recipients container is not the default destination for the ADC connection agreement, the value of the OBJ-DIST-NAME attribute will receive a value that is different to the value of the LegacyExchangeDN attribute. In this scenario, you will experience the error that is described in the "Symptoms" section.

Additionally, the value of the OBJ-DIST-NAME attribute cannot be changed in Exchange Server 5.5. However, the value of the LegacyExchangeDN attribute can be changed at any time in Active Directory.

To prevent a mismatch of the values of the OBJ-DIST-NAME attribute and the LegacyExchangeDN attribute, make sure that the OBJ-DIST-NAME attribute value is replicated from the Exchange Server 5.5 directory into Active Directory. Therefore you must configure a two-way connection agreement.
